Herbert Wellness Center and COVID-19

While the University begins discovering a new normal in the age of physical distancing, the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center is committed to providing our services in as safe an environment as possible while adhering to county guidelines regarding recreational facilities in addition to University-wide protocols. Effective May 17, 2021, the Herbert Wellness Center is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, trustees, spouses, domestic partners, and dependents. As the global pandemic continues to evolve, we will make necessary updates to the information provided below.

Our Commitment to Safety

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Miami-Dade County, and University of Miami experts in public health, below are the measures we are taking to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Gym wipes, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant are available throughout the facility.
Regular cleaning and disinfecting of restrooms, doors, handles, touch screens, etc.
Adjusted hours to allow for a thorough cleaning of the entire facility after the building closes each night.
Fitness staff will continually clean the fitness equipment and monitor the Parsons Fitness Room to ensure safety protocols are followed by all users.

Help Us Slow the Spread

While we navigate the new normal, we request that our valued members follow additional guidelines while utilizing our facilities. In addition to the below guidelines, all non-student members must digitally sign the updated waiver.

A separate facial covering and towel are required to enter the facility. No exceptions. Wearing a facial covering is required at all times, even when working out. We recommend that strenuous activities be conducted outside.
Everyone must complete a screening survey prior to entering the facility. 
Follow physical distancing guidelines as dictated by building signage and instructions from the staff.
Anyone exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms defined by the CDC will be asked to leave immediately.
Clean equipment before and after each use (e.g. dumbbells, grips, medicine balls, heavy bags, etc.)
Registration for group exercise classes using the online portal or the app (search for UM Wellness) is required.

Use your phone to check-in

Our app allows you to use your phone to access our facilities seamlessly with a touchless process.

Use your time efficiently

We will have limited space for idle time in the facility, so be sure to plan your visit in a way that you can get your workout done upon arrival and be able to leave shortly after.

Temporary Facility Closures and Restrictions

  • Fitness programs and wellness services will resume in a suitable manner.
  • Cash and checks are not accepted.
  • Basketball: Individual play only (unless from same household), three people per half court.
  • Racquetball/Squash: Masks required at all times. Reservations required. To reserve click here
  • Activities on the intramural fields are limited to groups of nine or less per half-field and a mask is required at all times. 
  • Storm Zone is limited to four patrons at a time.

  • Is the pool open?

    The pool and spa are tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 19. The saunas will reopen on Monday, May 17. Until the locker rooms reopen on May 17, members can change in the cabana located on the pool deck or in the family bathrooms located next to the outdoor courts. 

  • Will my membership be extended when I return?

    Once the Wellness Center reopens to non-student members, all prepaid memberships will automatically be extended the total number of days the facility was closed.

    Billing for open-ended memberships (payroll deduction, credit card billing and electronic funds transfer) stopped on April 1, 2020. Payroll deduction resumed on December 1, 2020. Credit card billing and electronic funds transfer will resume on June 1, 2021.

  • Will there be a capacity limit in the Parsons Fitness Room and group exercise classes?

    A maximum of 110 people are allowed in the Parsons Fitness Room, 40 of which can use the weight area. Equipment reservations are temporarily suspended.

    Group exercise classes will have a capacity limit based on the type of class and its location (please check the app for capacity limits per class.) Members must register via the app or online portal to reserve a space in all group exercise classes.  

  • Can I suspend my membership?

    In accordance with our policy, we do not freeze or suspend memberships. Please call the sales office at 305-284-5433 for specific questions regarding your membership.

  • What is the status of locker rentals?

    As of May 17, 2021, locker areas and showers will reopen with physical distancing guidelines in place. 

  • How can I retrieve my belongings from my locker?

    You may go to the Herbert Wellness Center and ask the facility manager on duty to escort you to your locker or email wellnesscenter@miami.edu to make an appointment.

  • I do not feel comfortable returning, can I receive a refund for my membership?

    If you do not feel comfortable returning and would like to cancel your membership, please email wellnesscenter@miami.edu. If you have prepaid your membership, you can choose to receive a credit on your account to use for future membership renewals or purchases, or receive a refund.

  • How does this impact recreational sports programming?

    You may visit the intramural page and the club sports return to play information as to how this impacts each program area.
